It’s been long awaited but Airstream finally launched it’s brand new concept trailer Nest to the market April 12th, 2018. Clearly a departure from the iconic “silver bullet” aluminum travel trailer design, the 2-person, 3,400 pound Nest is a “a sign of 20th century progress,” says Airstream President and CEO Bob Wheeler.
From the press release we received just before the announcement: “Unifying Airstream’s commitment to a customer-first approach with a design-forward philosophy, Nest is the perfect blend of form and function.”
Originally conceived by Oregon designer Robert Johans, Nest was acquired by Airstream in March 2016 and further developed in-house, with Johans coming aboard as project manager.
It’s clear from the supplied imagery that while the fibreglass exterior is a departure from the norm, the interior is very much on point, exuding only the sharpest of design elements and unique features including two floorplans, six windows, wet bath and contemporary look and feel.
“We saw the acquisition of Nest as an opportunity for Airstream to curate the kind of good design we feel is essential,” said Wheeler. “Nest is modern, it’s functional, and it’s innovative in a way you rarely see in this industry.”
A few other specifications to note:
- GVWR 4,000 pounds
- 24 Gal fresh water tank
- 2 deep cycle group 24 batteries with multistage converter
- Exterior shower with hot and cold
- 2 burner cooktop
- pop up USB and 110 outlets
- Thetford toilet
- Power awning with LED lights
We’re excited to see this trailer in person but have to wonder whether the company’s move into the non-aluminium camper business will harm the reputation of this long standing company.
